Little did Julie George realise when she advertised her one-bedroom unit on Airbnb two years ago that it would end up dramatically improving her life and the lives of numerous locals.
She was renting her unit for $240 a week before listing it on Airbnb, where she received $600 a week consistently. And thus the seed was born to start Host My Home, an Airbnb property management business.
After starting in her spare bedroom, the business has exploded and now employs 13 locals working from a large office in Bungalow. Julie’s property portfolio on Airbnb received $1.43 million in bookings for 2017 and that number is predicted to double in 2018, making her one of the highest-earning Hosts on Airbnb nationwide.
“It has gone absolutely gangbusters, and we’re only two years in,” said Julie, who started the business to help others make money off their properties. “It’s very exciting.”
Host My Home offers a full management service for property owners wishing to lease their properties on Airbnb. It’s perfect for property investors looking for good returns whilst having the flexibility to use the property themselves.
Julie structured the business so her team have ownership over their portfolio of properties, which is financially beneficial and personally rewarding for them.
“It’s wonderful to see how the business has not only changed my life but the lives of my staff,” she said.
The business, which is believed to be the only one of its type in Australia, has expanded to Kuranda and the Tablelands, and Julie is currently looking for staff to cover the Port Douglas area.
She has grown the business so she now works on it, not in it, which gives her time to work on other projects including offering a consultancy service to train others who want to list and manage their own properties.
“It could be seen that we’re handing out our secrets but there’s so much work to go around,” she said. “I’m happy to share my knowledge.”
