She didn’t originally plan to become a doctor when she was younger, but lucky for Dr Phoebe Hong’s patients she did.
The highly skilled obstetrician, gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon, whose practice is at Cairns Central Plaza across from Cairns Central Shopping Centre, absolutely loves her chosen career.
“I love coming to work every day,” she said. “I love building relationships with my clients, and seeing their health improve.”
While in high school, she planned to become a pharmacist, but as so many of her friends were going to study medicine she decided to give it a try.
After high school, she moved from Malaysia to New Zealand and graduated with a medical degree from the University of Auckland in 2006. She then underwent specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology before coming to Cairns in 2013 to work at the Cairns Hospital.
She moved south to complete a two-year fellowship in advanced hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgeries. During this time, she was also a facilitator at several GP courses and the Basic Surgical Skill course for Junior Obstetric and Gynaecology Trainees, was also awarded a Covidien Scholarship and completed a Master of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Adelaide.
She returned to Cairns, set up her private practice and is one of a few doctors in the city who is highly skilled in advanced laparoscopic surgeries.
Not only is her practice welcoming, soothing and relaxing for patients and their families, it is also fitted with the lasted equipment to ensure her patients get the best possible care.
“I enjoy everything about my job, especially delivering babies,” said Phoebe, who also speaks Chinese Mandarin and Cantonese as well as Japanese. “My workplace is a happy place where everyone is relaxed and friendly.”
